Being aware of your environment and moving out of danger is a basic principle in self defence.
So, awareness is about being physically aware of who’s around you. Where possible threats are, where are opportunities for you to be able to go to be safe. The next important point from a self-defence point of view is movement, which is needed to be able to get away from any potential danger to get to safety.
